Branson Utilities Aims to Reduce Potential Water Loss with Leak Detection Study

Branson, MO (March 21, 2017) – During the past seven years, Branson Utilities has worked to reduce water loss from the City’s water system. In 2010, 33% of the water produced from the City’s water treatment facilities was lost in distribution prior to reaching the customer. City crews identified and repaired numerous leaks, and changed out aged and failing water meters that were not properly registering the amount of water consumed by customers. In 2016, water loss had thereby been reduced to 21%.

It is not unusual for water losses to occur due to main breaks and normal system flushing and maintenance. However, undetected leaks are costly, and systems should establish programs to reduce costs associated with water loss. On a national average, water systems typically average losses of 10-15%.

Branson Utilities has begun the next phase to further reduce water loss from the City’s system through a comprehensive leak detection survey. This survey will be performed by Matchpoint Water Asset Management Company over the next three weeks. Matchpoint will work its way through all residential areas and business districts, using electronic listening and correlation devices to pinpoint leaks that may be occurring, not visible at the ground surface. Customer water services should not be affected during the survey period.

Any leaks found in the City’s water mains will be prioritized and scheduled for repair. Residents and businesses will be given prior notice should any repairs be scheduled in their immediate service areas.

Questions related to this study, objectives and anticipated outcomes may be directed to the City of Branson Utility Department during normal business hours at 417.243.2740. After hour requests may be made by contacting the Branson Police Department at 417.334.3300.
